During our first trip to Uttarakhand, we decided to spend a night in Bhimtal before exploring the other gems the state has to offer. To our pleasant surprise, our stay in Bhimtal exceeded all expectations, turning into a memorable experience, despite being a brief visit. The breathtaking view of the lake right from our hotel, the delicious local cuisine, and the unforgettable boating experience were some of the highlights that made our stay special, giving us an unforgettable start to our Uttarakhand journey.

Embrace beauty of Bhimtal Lake
Crowned as the largest lake in the Kumaon region, Bhimtal Lake lies at the heart of Bhimtal town in Uttarakhand. This natural wonder was formed due to geological faults resulting from the shifting of the Earth's crust. Surrounded by lush green mountains, Bhimtal Lake is one of the most picturesque spots in the region, offering a serene and breathtaking landscape.
A must-do activity is boating on this expansive lake, especially around sunset for capturing memorable snapshots. You can also visit the aquarium located on an island in the middle of the lake, adding a unique charm to your visit.
Take a leisurely stroll around the lake, where you'll find a variety of food stalls and local shops. It’s the perfect opportunity to savor regional delicacies or pick up unique souvenirs as a memento of your visit.
Boating in Naukuchia taal
Naukuchia Taal, also known as Naukuchiatal, is a serene and picturesque lake located near Bhimtal in Uttarakhand. Situated just 5 km away from Bhimtal Lake, Naukuchia Taal is named for its unique shape, as the lake has nine corners. Surrounded by dense oak forests, it offers a peaceful and tranquil environment, making it an ideal getaway from the hustle and bustle.
Boating on Naukuchia Taal is an unforgettable experience, especially during sunset or early in the morning when the lake reflects the beautiful skies. Folk Culture Museum, also known as Lok Sanskriti Sangrahalaya, was established nearly 40 years ago by Dr. Yashodhar Mathpal. Located just 4 km from Bhimtal Lake, this privately owned museum offers an insightful glimpse into the rich and vibrant folk culture of Uttarakhand.
If you're keen to explore the region’s heritage, a visit to the Folk Culture Museum is a must. The museum showcases a fascinating collection of valuable artifacts, including old photographs, folk paintings, and traditional crafts. In addition, you'll find various archaeological objects and rock art too.
There is a nominal entry fee to the museum, making it an affordable yet enriching experience for visitors.

For many of us, one of the highlights of a vacation is sampling the local cuisine. Often, we dedicate a special time to seek out the popular dishes and discover where to find them.
On your next trip to Bhimtal, don't miss the chance to try Aloo ke Gutke, Thechwani, and Singori (a traditional sweet dish). These local delicacies offer a true taste of Uttarakhand's culinary culture.
While Momos are not native to Uttarakhand, we couldn't resist trying them near Bhimtal Lake and they were absolutely mouthwatering!
A day trip to Nainital
Since Nainital is just 20 km from Bhimtal, it makes for a perfect day trip, allowing you to explore several popular tourist attractions in and around Nainital.
Some of the must-visit places include Nainital Lake, the Naina Devi Temple, Mall Road, the Nainital Zoo, and the Eco Cave Garden, among others.
However, it's important to keep in mind that Nainital tends to be crowded year-round, especially on weekends and late evenings. During these times, finding parking near the Lake area can be particularly challenging. So, it’s advisable to plan your visit accordingly to avoid any hassles.
How to reach Bhimtal
By Air: The nearest airport to Bhimtal is Pantnagar Airport, located 55 km away. Taxis are readily available at the airport, and the journey to Bhimtal typically takes around 2 hours.
By Train: The nearest railway station to Bhimtal is Kathgodam railway station. It is just 21 km away from Bhimtal. One can reach Delhi and can catch a train from Delhi to Kathgodam. You can pre-book taxi or else hire from the station to reach Bhimtal
By Road: Bhimtal is very well connected to many major nearby cities of Uttarakhand via a good road network. State transport buses or private volvos do run between cities with good frequency.
